Excellence through Effort & Enjoyment
Be Kind…Be Safe…Be Responsible

Keith Hatton's Writing Workshops

Today the children had a visit from the author Keith Hatton and they experienced some writing workshops.

Today the children at Boughton had a great day full of writing workshops delivered by author Keith Hatton. He visited each class and spent quality time with the children whilst they created great descriptive paragraphs or story boards on ideas ranging from fictional dinosaurs to enchanted forests. Keith used ideas and extracts from his own published books.

In Reception and Year 1 the children listened to Keith’s own book ‘Purple Panda’ and then thought about what other adventures Purple Panda could go on. There were some good creative ideas shared.

In Year 2 Keith shared the story of ‘Purple Panda’ and then the children spent some time designing their own stories with an exciting main character. Once again there were some creative ideas; a lot of the children used their favourite teddy bear from home as their main character.

In Year 3 and 4 the children read an extract from Professor Plunder’s Time Machine, then using ideas from the story the children created their own dinosaurs. To follow this, they wrote their own descriptive sentences magpieing ideas from the book, written by Keith Hatton.

Finally, in Years 5 and 6 the children spent some time changing the verbs in Keith’s original sentences to make them more exciting and to add more detail into the reader’s mind. Then using the ideas from the starter activity, the children had to write their own descriptive sentences using a stimulus. They were encouraged to use their senses and interesting words given to them.

All the children loved meeting Keith and now they all want to be authors.
