Excellence through Effort & Enjoyment
Be Kind…Be Safe…Be Responsible

Term 5 Week 5 18th May 2020

Morning!  Welcome to the last week of term and what a strange one it has been!  You will notice that there is the usual work and a bit more work this week.  As next week is half-term some of you may want to keep busy with a few extra activities.  As usual, these are suggested activities if you are well enough and able to complete.

Maths this week is the last week of decimals!  I know these have been tough but well done to everyone who has given them a go.  You will need to access the White Rose Home Learning, Summer Term, Week 2, w/c 27th April.  The first lesson is about Rounding decimals.  Again, make sure you watch the videos on the website before attempting the worksheets which are attached below with the answers.  If you need any previous lessons then let me know.  As we are at the end of the decimals section I have also included a loop game with decimals and fractions and an additional decimals activity.  The loop game is usually completed with each child in the class having a card, but you could do it like a big jigsaw puzzle if you wanted.  Don't forget to give the decimals section on Mathletics a go now too.

Your spellings this week all have the prefix non.  I have included a dictionary challenge sheet where you would look up the meaning of the root words with a dictionary or online if you don't have one and then apply the prefix.  Using a dictionary is a great skill to have so practise finding words if you have one in your home.  I'm aware there is an answer sheet attached with no answers.  I can't get rid of it - sorry!

I know some of you have finished your Talk 4 Writing work, well done!  The link is below if you need it.

Thank you to everyone who has completed their countries projects.  I have been able to give out a lot of house points for these.  If you haven't you can still complete one, or do another if you found it interesting!

Something different that I am going to set for over the next two weeks is a bit of Science.  At this time of the year we should have been doing some work on teeth.  I have attached a presentation on teeth types and their functions.  You could complete this activity or choose a different way to research the five types of human teeth and what their functions are.  The second stage of this would have been to complete a little experiment on tooth decay.  This is something you might be able to do at home, if you get permission!  We would have been investigating the impact that different types of liquid would have on teeth.  We do this by using hardboiled eggs, as their shells are made of calcium carbonate which is similar to what our teeth are made of.  We would have kept the eggs immersed in different liquids for the same amount of time, probably a few days or a week, and then checked to see what has happened to the shell.  In the past we have used cola, orange, milk, water, vinegar etc.  It can get a bit smelly so you would need to seal the top of the cups with clingfilm or similar.  I have attached a presentation which explains terms used in scientific enquiry.  You could have a look through this for ideas on how to set up a fair test.  Just have a go and record your findings!  Please make sure you check with a parent before you start boiling eggs or using up different liquids.

Lastly I wanted to draw your attention to some videos on the Home Learning - Overview - Home School - Handwriting.  Mrs Cook created some videos for Reception to continue to work on their Kinetic Letters.  I would recommend that any Year 4 who needed to practise some handwriting have a look at these.  It's good to remember what you have done and not lose any of that lovely formation that you all worked so hard on.

Keep in contact on the boughtonyr4@gmail.com if you need me.   There will be no new home learning next Monday but keep letting me know how you are getting on and have a great week.
